A Nutritional Powerhouse:
Ube is not just beautiful and delicious; it’s incredibly nutritious. Its brilliant purple colour comes from anthocyanins, the same powerful antioxidants found in blueberries. It is an excellent source of:

  • Complex Carbohydrates: For sustained energy.

  • Dietary Fibre: Supports digestive health.

  • Vitamin C: Boosts immune function and skin health.

  • Vitamin A (from beta-carotene): Essential for vision and immune health.

  • Potassium: Helps regulate blood pressure.

  • Antioxidants: Fights oxidative stress and supports overall wellness.

Culinary Versatility at Its Best:
Ube is a wonderfully versatile root vegetable. It must be cooked before eating and can be used in countless ways:

  • Savory Dishes: A colourful and nutritious substitute for potatoes—roast, mash, or fry them.

  • Sweet Treats: The key ingredient for iconic desserts like Ube halaya (jam), ice cream, cakes, and pastries.

  • Pantry Staple: Slice and dehydrate the tubers, then grind them into a brilliant purple powder to add colour and flavour to smoothies, baked goods, and more.

An easy-to-grow plant that prefers a partially shaded spot and a trellis or structure to climb.

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Initial Care: Upon arrival, give your plant a good drink and place it in a partially shaded, sheltered spot. Allow it to recover from its journey in the original pot for a few days before transplanting.

  • Transplanting: Re-pot or plant into the garden when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Water thoroughly immediately after planting.

  • Position & Support: Prefers a partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. It will not tolerate waterlogged conditions, so a slightly raised garden bed is ideal. Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or other structure for the vine to climb.

  • Harvesting & Replanting: The tubers are ready for harvest in winter when the vine has naturally died back. When you dig them up, you can replant smaller tubers or pieces to continue your crop for the next season.

Additional Notes

  • Sun Acclimatisation: Our nursery plants are grown in partial shade. For the healthiest transition, gradually introduce them to more sun over several days before planting them in their permanent position.
