Queensland Arrowroot PLANT – QLD Arrowroot – Canna Edulis

A beautiful, fast-growing, and low-maintenance perennial plant prized for its starchy, potato-like rhizomes!

QLD Arrowroot (Canna edulis) is an evergreen perennial that’s both ornamental and productive. Its starchy rhizomes make an excellent potato substitute—ideal for slow-cooked dishes, soups, and stews. Young rhizomes have a mild, potato-like flavor, while older ones become fibrous and are better suited for animal feed or propagation. You can also grate, dehydrate, and grind the rhizomes into a versatile, gluten-free flour.

This plant thrives in warm climates, shooting up to 2m tall in just one season! Its large leaves are perfect for chop-and-drop mulch, enriching your garden soil, and they’re also a favorite snack for livestock. Once established, QLD Arrowroot spreads vigorously—plant it once, and enjoy harvests for years!

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Planting: Can be grown directly in the ground or in a large pot (ideal for cooler climates).

  • Position: Prefers part shade (full sun may scorch leaves).

  • Watering: Keep soil moist after planting until established. Avoid waterlogged conditions—well-drained soil is a must! (Raised beds work great.)

  • Growth Habit: Expands quickly in warm weather. In cold winters (below 0°C), it may die back but will regrow in spring.

  • Maintenance: Trim dead leaves to encourage new growth. Divide clumps every few years to boost productivity and propagate new plants.

  • Harvesting: Dig up rhizomes as needed. Younger ones are tender; older ones are fibrous but great for flour or replanting.
