Interesting facts about star fruit: “The nutritional and medical properties of star fruit include antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, hypocholesterolemic, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐infective, and antitumor effects. However, majority of these findings are extrapolated from in vitro or animal studies. On the other hand, star fruit ingestion has also been shown to cause nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Future studies should focus on the level of ingestion and conditions at which the beneficial effects become toxic. (Lakmal et.al., 2021)”

Planting and growing tips: Start in a pot or tray to ensure success. Keep moist, not wet, until the seeds sprout. Replant into individual pots when the seedlings got 2-3 leaves. Star fruit is an easy-to-grow plant, that loves full sun and not much watering. Replant into its final position or to a larger pot at the latest when you see some roots coming out of the pot’s bottom holes. The better the soil, the quicker and better it will grow. It doesn’t like to sit in water so a well-drained position is best. All our edibles grow happily and quickly in slightly raised garden beds.

Additional notes:

  • The price is for five seeds, coming from my plant, naturally grown in my permaculture food forest. Not to SA, NT, WA or Tasmania. No pickup for seeds unless you buy plants or cuttings, too.
  • Do your research before trying any new foods. Please also note our disclaimer in the footer of this page.
