Red Dragon Fruit Plant – Self-Pollinating & Untreated
Large, Sweet Fruits | Selenicereus undatus | Potted for Success
Begin your dragon fruit journey with a strong, established start! This heirloom variety is a gardener’s favourite for its reliable production of large, juicy, and vibrantly coloured fruits without the need for a second plant. A perfect, low-maintenance choice for beginners and experts alike, it is a prolific bearer that can bear fruit a couple of times per year under the right conditions. A robust, climbing cactus ideally suited to warm, frost-free Australian gardens. Its self-fertile nature makes it one of the easiest and most reliable varieties to fruit.
Key Features:
-
Ready-to-Grow Plant: An established potted plant offers a significant head start over cuttings, leading to earlier flowering and fruiting.
-
Self-Pollinating Convenience: Flowers pollinate themselves, ensuring fruit set with just one plant. Perfect for small spaces.
-
Heirloom & Untreated: Naturally grown in our food forest without chemicals.
-
Large, Prolific Fruits: Known for consistently producing generous yields of sweet, magenta-fleshed fruit, often multiple times per season.
Ideal Conditions:
-
Climate: Thrives in warm, frost-free zones (subtropical and tropical regions). In temperate or cooler areas, grow in a large container that can be moved to a protected spot or greenhouse in winter.
-
Sun: For best flowering and fruiting, provide full sun (6+ hours daily). It tolerates partial shade, which can be beneficial in extremely hot inland summers.
-
Soil: Requires excellent drainage. Use a premium cactus/succulent mix for pots. In garden beds, plant in slightly raised mounds or well-drained soil to prevent root rot.
-
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. It is drought-tolerant once established. Reduce watering in winter.
Initial Care & Planting:
-
On Arrival: Place the potted plant in a partially shaded, sheltered spot for 5-7 days to recover from transit. Water it thoroughly.
-
Acclimatisation: Our nursery plants are grown in partial shade. Gradually introduce it to more sun over a week before final planting to prevent sunburn.
-
Planting Out: Transplant into a larger pot or its final garden position when roots are well-established. It needs a strong trellis, post, or fence for support immediately upon planting.
-
First Water: Water deeply immediately after transplanting.
What to Expect:
With good care in a warm climate, a potted plant of this size can begin to flower and set fruit within the first 1-2 years after planting.
