Australian Native Turmeric PLANT (Curcuma australasica) – Heirloom & Untreated
A Stunning Native with Culinary & Ornamental Value!
Discover the versatile beauty of our Australian Native Turmeric! This unique Curcuma australasica is a hardy perennial endemic to Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. While different from the common culinary turmeric (Curcuma longa), this native gem offers its own distinct qualities. It produces spectacular pink and purple flower cones and lush, broad leaves, making it a stunning ornamental plant that also delivers edible benefits. While it loves the heat and humidity of tropical and subtropical climates, it will adapt beautifully to a protected hothouse in cooler parts of Australia.
The rhizomes can be used fresh in cooking, providing a mild, earthy flavour with subtle peppery notes—perfect for adding a native twist to dishes. They can also be dehydrated and ground into a vibrant yellow powder for use in spices, teas, or as a natural colourant. This plant is an excellent choice for tropical-style gardens, pond edges, or partial shaded areas, bringing both beauty and functionality to your garden.

Planting & Growing Tips
-
Initial Care: Upon arrival, give your plant a good drink and place it in a partially shaded, sheltered spot. Allow it to recover from its journey in the original pot for a few days before transplanting.
-
Transplanting: Re-pot or plant into the garden when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Water thoroughly immediately after planting.
-
Position: Prefers a partially shaded spot with well-drained soil.
-
Watering: Regular watering is important, especially during the growing season.
-
Harvesting: Rhizomes can be harvested after the plant is established. For continuous growth, harvest sparingly or divide mature plants, always leaving a portion to regenerate.
Additional Notes
-
Culinary Note: The flavour profile of Curcuma australasica is milder and more peppery than common turmeric. We recommend trying a small amount first to appreciate its unique character.
-
Sun Acclimatisation: Our nursery plants are grown in partial shade. Gradually introduce them to their permanent position to prevent stress.
-
Preservation: To store your harvest, slice the fresh rhizomes and dehydrate them completely, then grind into a powder for long-term use.
