Ceylon Hill Gooseberry PLANT (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa) – Heirloom & Untreated
Also known as: Downy Myrtle

Add stunning beauty and delicious bounty to your garden with the Ceylon Hill Gooseberry! This hardy, ornamental shrub is a dual-purpose gem, offering evergreen foliage and producing an abundance of unique, edible berries. The fruits boast a flavour reminiscent of blueberries, but are larger, juicier, and contain fewer seeds—perfect for fresh eating, jams, and preserves.

Ideal for subtropical and warm temperate climates, including Australian regions that experience light frosts, this versatile plant thrives in both garden beds and containers. For a more abundant harvest, we recommend planting at least two shrubs to encourage cross-pollination. A must-have for food forest enthusiasts and berry lovers alike!

Rich in health benefits, the berries are packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, and anthocyanins, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential to support heart health.

Planting & Growing Tips
  • Initial Care: Upon arrival, give your plant a good drink and place it in a partially shaded, sheltered spot. Allow it to acclimatise in its original pot for a few days before transplanting.

  • Transplanting: Re-pot or plant into the garden when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes. Water thoroughly immediately after planting.

  • Position: Prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained soil. It does not like to sit in water, so a slightly raised garden bed is ideal for optimal growth.

  • Care: Requires minimal watering once established. The better the soil quality, the quicker and healthier your plant will grow.

  • Fruiting: For the best fruit yield, plant a second shrub to ensure good cross-pollination.

Additional Notes
  • Sun Acclimatisation: Our nursery plants are grown in semi-shade. To prevent sun shock, gradually introduce them to more sun over several days before planting them in their permanent position.

  • Disclaimer: As with any new food, we recommend you research before consumption. Please also see the full disclaimer in the footer of this page.
