Broadleaf Plantain PLANT – Untreated & Heirloom – Greater Plantain – Medicinal Perennial Herb – Plantago major

Discover the remarkable versatility of Broadleaf Plantain, a humble yet powerful perennial herb that has been treasured in kitchens and traditional medicine since ancient times. This resilient, easy-to-grow plant is a valuable addition to any garden, offering edible leaves, seeds, and flowers, as well as a wide range of wellness applications. It thrives in a vast range of soil types and is well-suited to gardens across all of Australia.

Your plant is a cutting propagated by Ewa from our healthy mother plant, ensuring a vigorous, chemical-free start.

Key Features:

  • Heirloom & Untreated: Naturally grown, chemical-free plant from our permaculture garden.

  • Fully Edible: Young leaves, flowers, and seeds are all edible and nutritious.

  • Traditional Medicinal Herb: Valued for centuries for its soothing and healing properties.

  • Incredibly Adaptable: Thrives in diverse soils and climates throughout Australia.

  • From Our Garden to Yours: Personally propagated from our mother plant for guaranteed quality.

Culinary Uses:
The young, tender leaves have a mild, spinach-like flavour and are delicious raw in salads. As leaves mature, they are excellent cooked in stir-fries, soups, and stews. The small, greenish flowers are also edible and can be added fresh to dishes. For a unique treat, the seeds can be lightly roasted and enjoyed as a nutritious snack or sprinkled over meals.

Medicinal & Wellness Uses:
The entire plant can be harvested and dehydrated for year-round use. It is wonderful for making herbal teas, infusions, tinctures, and infused oils. Modern research continues to validate its traditional applications:

“Some of its traditional properties including wound healing, antipyretic, antitussive, anti-infective, anti-hemorrhagic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, laxative, astringent and hemostatic have been confirmed in recent researches.”

Growing Guide for Australian Conditions:
One of the most adaptable and forgiving plants you can grow.

Initial Care & Planting:

  1. On Arrival: Water the potted plant thoroughly and place it in a sheltered, partially shaded spot for a few days to recover from transit.

  2. Acclimatisation: Gradually introduce it to its final position over the course of a week.

  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and water in well after planting.

Ideal Conditions:

  • Climate: Thrives in all Australian climates, from cool temperate to tropical. It is remarkably hardy and adaptable.

  • Sun: Grows well in full sun to partial shade. In hotter inland areas, some afternoon shade is beneficial.

  • Soil: Extremely adaptable to a wide range of soil types, from poor compacted soils to rich garden loam. Tolerates both dry and periodically moist conditions.

  • Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once mature, it is quite drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional water during extended dry periods.

  • Harvesting: Pick young leaves regularly for the best flavour. For medicinal use, harvest mature leaves and flowering spikes throughout the growing season.
