Key Features:
Unique Heirloom Fruit:Â Produces distinctive, dark burgundy to nearly black cherries with a complex, rich flavour.
Ornamental & Productive:Â An evergreen with glossy leaves, attractive bark, and seasonal flowers, making it a superb landscaping choice.
Untreated & Naturally Grown:Â Chemical-free, heirloom plant nurtured in our permaculture system.
Versatile Harvest:Â Enjoy fruit fresh, or transform it into jams, sauces, juices, and liqueurs.
Health & Nutritional Value:
The deep colour of the fruit indicates a high concentration of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins. Brazilian Cherries are also a notable source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, supporting immune function and overall wellness. The leaves are also traditionally used in herbal teas.
Growing Guide for Australian Conditions:
A remarkably adaptable, low-maintenance tree that thrives in warm temperate to tropical climates.
Initial Care & Planting:
On Arrival: Water the potted plant thoroughly and place it in a partially shaded, sheltered spot for one week to recover from transit.
Acclimatisation:Â Gradually introduce it to more sun over several days before planting in its final position.
Planting:Â Choose a sunny, well-drained location. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and water deeply after planting.
Ideal Conditions:
Climate: Best in frost-free subtropical and tropical regions (excellent for QLD and coastal NSW). It can tolerate very light frost once established if protected.
Sun: Prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal flowering and fruiting.
Soil: Adaptable but prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Enriches with compost when planting. Tolerates sandy soils.
Watering:Â Water regularly while young and establishing. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but produce better fruit with consistent moisture during fruiting.
Growth Habit:Â Can be maintained as a large shrub (2-3m) with pruning or grown as a small tree (4-6m). Suitable for large containers.
