September in the garden is a true celebration of renewal and growth. Spring has officially arrived, bringing longer days, warmer soil, and a sense of joyful urgency in the garden. Here on the Fraser Coast, the low-chill apple and plum trees are in full bloom, bees are buzzing from flower to flower, and the frog chorus at dusk grows louder every evening. It’s a month of immense potential—a time to sow, grow, and flourish.

In my food forest, the blossoms are everywhere, and the first tiny fruit are beginning to form. The strawberries are producing their first sweet gems, the citrus are blooming, and the smell of jasmine fills the air. It’s a magical time—full of promise and the thrill of new beginnings.

A September Tip for Every Gardener:

Before we explore climate-specific advice, here’s what I’m doing in my garden right now: planting, mulching, and feeding. The soil is warming, and plants are hungry for nutrients. I’m adding compost to garden beds, applying a thick layer of mulch (up to 10cm) around fruit trees, and planting out seedlings that will provide abundance in the months ahead. I’m also staying ahead of fruit fly by organising netting bags—available in my online store if you need them!

Now, let’s explore what to plant and do in your garden this September, wherever you are in Australia.

Tropical Gardens (Northern QLD, NT, WA)

What’s Happening:

The dry season is still hanging on, but humidity is slowly returning. It’s a great time to plant right before the wet season kicks in. The soil is warm, and growth is accelerating.

Key Jobs This Month:

  • Plant trees and shrubs before the full heat returns.
  • Mulch deeply to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Check irrigation systems—ensure they’re ready for the dry weeks ahead.
  • Feed fruit trees with organic fertiliser to support new growth.

What to Plant Now:

Vegetables: Okra, sweet potato, snake beans, corn, rosella
Herbs: Lemongrass, basil, perennial chillies, ginger, turmeric
Fruits: Papaya, banana, citrus, mango (grafted varieties)

Arid & Semi-Arid Gardens (Inland SA, NT, WA, NSW)

What’s Happening:

Temperatures are warming steadily, and frost risk is decreasing. It’s time to prepare for the growing season ahead while protecting plants from any lingering cold snaps.

Key Jobs This Month:

  • Prepare garden beds with compost and organic matter.
  • Protect young seedlings from any unexpected late frosts.
  • Water deeply and less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
  • Plant heat-tolerant varieties that will thrive in the coming months.

What to Plant Now:

Vegetables: Tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, beans
Herbs: Basil, coriander, parsley, chives, oregano
Fruits: Citrus, pomegranate, fig (with regular watering)

Subtropical Gardens (SE QLD, Northern NSW) – My Garden This Month!

What’s Happening in My Food Forest:

September is pure magic! The low-chill apple and plum trees are covered in blossoms, the bees are working overtime, and the first strawberries are ripening. I’m planting out tomatoes, capsicums, and eggplants now that the soil has warmed, and direct-sowing cucumbers, beans, and zucchini into well-composted beds. It’s a month of joyful, energetic growth.

Key Jobs This Month:

  • Plant out summer vegetables—tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, cucumbers.
  • Fertilise fruit trees with compost and organic pellets.
  • Apply a deep layer of mulch (up to 10cm thick) around fruit trees and in raised garden beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Keep an eye out for fruit fly—organise netting bags (available in my online store, link below).
  • Direct-sow beans, corn, and zucchini into prepared beds.
  • Feed the soil with compost, worm castings, or compost tea.

What to Plant Now:

Vegetables: Zucchini, cucumber, pumpkin, tomatoes, luffa, bottle gourd, beans, sweet corn
Herbs: Basil, mint, parsley, society garlic, coriander
Fruits: Passionfruit, pineapples, bananas, blueberries, papaya, mango, and many more—choose according to your space and liking

Temperate Gardens (Southern NSW, VIC, TAS, SA, WA)

What’s Happening:

Frosts are easing, days are lengthening, and the soil is slowly warming. It’s time to begin the main spring planting rush! This is one of the most productive and exciting months.

Key Jobs This Month:

  • Prepare veggie beds with compost and well-rotted manure.
  • Plant out seedlings of frost-tender crops after your last frost date.
  • Stake and support climbing plants like peas and tomatoes.
  • Start regular watering as temperatures rise.

What to Plant Now:

Vegetables: Beetroot, carrots, spinach, peas, potatoes, lettuce, silverbeet
Herbs: Coriander, dill, chives, thyme, oregano
Flowers: Marigolds, sunflowers, alyssum, nasturtiums

A Final Tip for Every Gardener:

Water deeply and less frequently to encourage strong root growth as we head into warmer months. A good, deep soak once or twice a week is better than a light sprinkle every day.

A Personal Note…

September always feels like the garden’s New Year to me. It’s a fresh start, a new cycle, and a chance to grow even more food than last year. Whether you’re planting a windowsill herb garden or a full-scale food forest, I hope this month brings you beautiful growth, delicious harvests, and plenty of garden joy.

There’s something deeply satisfying about watching the garden awaken after winter—the blossoms, the bees, the first tiny fruits. It reminds me why I love this journey so much.

What are you most excited to plant this September? I’d love to hear—share in the comments!
