April arrives with a gentle certainty. The fierce heat of summer has faded, the air holds a crispness in the mornings, and the garden settles into a rhythm of quiet abundance. It’s my favourite time to be outside—cool enough to work without breaking a sweat, yet warm enough for growth to continue steadily.
In my food forest, the citrus are beginning to blush, the sweet potato vines are sprawling with harvest ready, and the autumn vegetables I planted last month are settling in beautifully. This is a month of harvesting, planting, and preparing the garden for the slower, cooler season ahead.
Whether you’re in the tropics welcoming the dry season, in the arid zone enjoying milder days, or in the temperate south preparing for winter, this April guide will help you make the most of this golden month.
Tropical Gardens (Northern QLD, NT, WA)
What’s Happening:
The wet season is drawing to a close in many areas, with clearer skies, lower humidity, and cooler nights. It’s a wonderful time to plant before the full dry season sets in.
Key Jobs This Month:
- Prepare garden beds for the dry season by adding compost and mulch.
- Harvest remaining wet-season crops like okra, snake beans, and sweet potato.
- Prune back perennials to encourage fresh growth.
- Check irrigation systems to ensure they’re ready for the dry months.
What to Plant Now:
Vegetables: Eggplant, capsicum, snake beans, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin
Herbs: Lemongrass, basil, ginger, turmeric
Fruits: Papaya, banana, passionfruit, dragon fruit
Arid & Semi-Arid Gardens (Inland SA, NT, WA, NSW)
What’s Happening:
Temperatures are becoming much more pleasant, making this one of the most productive times of the year. The risk of extreme heat has passed.
Key Jobs This Month:
- Plant a wide range of vegetables now for winter and spring harvests.
- Refresh mulch to conserve moisture as the days shorten.
- Harvest any remaining summer crops and prepare beds for winter.
- Consider cover crops in empty beds to improve soil over winter.
What to Plant Now:
Vegetables:Â Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, peas, broad beans
Herbs:Â Parsley, coriander, dill, chives, rosemary
Fruits:Â Citrus, pomegranate, fig (with regular watering)
Subtropical Gardens (SE QLD, Northern NSW) – My Garden This Month!
What’s Happening in My Food Forest:
April is pure joy in the garden. The oppressive heat has lifted, and the autumn crops I planted in March are thriving. I’m harvesting lettuce, spinach, eggplant, capsicum, and the first cucumbers are starting to show up. The citrus are starting to colour—grapefruit ‘Ruby Red’ and lemons are my early favourites. I’m also giving the soil a final boost with compost and worm castings before the cooler months slow things down.
Key Jobs This Month:
- Continue planting autumn vegetables—there’s still plenty of growing time.
- Feed citrus with a balanced organic fertiliser for developing fruit.
- Divide and plant perennial herbs like chives, oregano, and thyme.
- Collect seeds from summer crops to save for next season.
- Mulch around trees and perennials to protect roots through winter.
What to Plant Now:
Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, carrots, beetroot, peas
Herbs: Parsley, coriander, dill, chives, thyme, mint
Fruits: Strawberries, blueberries, dwarf citrus, raspberries
Temperate Gardens (Southern NSW, VIC, TAS, SA, WA)
What’s Happening:
Autumn is in full swing, with crisp mornings and mild days. This is a critical time for planting cool-season crops that will feed you through winter and into spring.
Key Jobs This Month:
- Plant winter vegetables while the soil is still warm enough for root establishment.
- Clean up summer crops and add them to compost.
- Start preparing for frost by identifying tender plants that may need protection.
- Plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips.
What to Plant Now:
Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beetroot, broad beans, peas
Herbs: Parsley, coriander, chives, sage, thyme
Flowers: Pansies, violas, calendula, sweet peas
A Final Tip for Every Gardener:
Plant garlic this month. April is the perfect time across most of Australia to plant garlic cloves for harvest in late spring or early summer. Choose a sunny spot, well-drained soil, and plant each clove pointy end up, about 10cm apart. Mulch well and water in—then wait for the magic.
A Personal Reflection…
April always feels like a slow, deep breath. The frantic pace of summer is behind me, and I find myself lingering in the garden—watching the light shift through the canopy, listening to the quiet buzz of late-season bees, and appreciating the simple satisfaction of pulling a carrot from the cool soil.
There’s no rush this month. Just the gentle work of tending, harvesting, and preparing for the winter to come. I hope your April garden brings you the same sense of peace and plenty.
