Interesting facts about Melissa officinalis: “Melissa officinalis L. is a medicinal plant that has long been used in different ethno-medical systems especially in the European Traditional Medicine and the Iranian Traditional Medicine for the treatment of several diseases. It is also widely used as a vegetable and to add flavor to dishes. (Shakeri et.al., 2016)”. “The chemical properties of the plant, when ingested or inhaled, have relaxing effects on the body among numerous other health benefits like easing stomach pains, promoting sleep, antiviral, and antispasmodic properties (Moradkhani et al. 2010).”

Planting and growing tips:  Best to start in trays or Jiffy pots. Lemon Balm is an easy-to-grow herb and will adapt to many different types of soil. The better the soil, the quicker and better it will grow. It prefers a cool, semi-shade position. It doesn’t like to sit in water so a well-drained position is best. All our edibles grow happily and quickly in raised garden beds.

  • Lemon balm is a perennial herbaceous plant that can be grown in all climates. Best to start the seeds in early spring. It may struggle in the tropics but can still be grown as an annual from April to September.
