Galangal RHIZOME (Alpinia galanga) – Organic Thai Ginger – Heirloom & Untreated
Grow your own authentic Southeast Asian spice! This listing is for a fresh, untreated Greater Galangal rhizome (root section)—the key to propagating your own prolific plant. Skip the seedling stage and establish a mature clump faster. Galangal is essential for creating vibrant Thai curries, aromatic soups, and traditional herbal remedies.
Why Grow from a Rhizome?
-
Faster Establishment: Compared to seeds, a viable rhizome establishes more quickly, leading to a harvestable plant sooner.
-
Genetic Consistency: You are guaranteed to grow the true Alpinia galanga variety, known for its robust flavour and medicinal properties.
-
Easy to Propagate: Simply plant and watch it grow! Each “eye” or growth node on the rhizome has the potential to sprout into a new stalk.
Culinary & Medicinal Powerhouse:
Once established, your plant will provide a continuous supply of:
-
Pungent Rhizomes: The prime ingredient for countless Asian dishes, with a sharp, citrusy, and peppery flavour.
-
Fragrant Leaves: Perfect for infusing broths and wrapping foods for steaming.
-
Stunning Edible Flowers: A beautiful and tasty garnish.
Galangal is also renowned in traditional medicine for aiding digestion and relieving stomach discomfort.

Sowing & Growing Guide
-
Upon Arrival: Your rhizome is ready to plant! If you cannot plant immediately, keep it in a cool, dark, and slightly moist place (like in a bag with damp peat moss or paper towel) to prevent it from drying out.
-
Planting:
-
Plant the rhizome horizontally, about 3-5 cm deep in a pot or garden bed.
-
Ensure the “eyes” (small buds) are facing upwards.
-
-
Position: Choose a warm, sheltered spot in partial shade to full sun with rich, well-draining soil. Slightly raised beds are ideal.
-
Initial Care: Water in well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist (but not waterlogged) until shoots appear.
-
Long-Term Care: This is a low-maintenance perennial. It will form a large clump over time. In cool climates, it may die back in winter but will re-shoot in spring. Feed with a balanced organic fertiliser during the growing season for the best yield.
Additional Notes
-
Freshness Guarantee: Our rhizomes are freshly dug and carefully selected for their viability.
-
Propagation: Once established, you can easily divide your own plant every few years to create more galangal or share with friends.
