Sowing & Planting:
When to Sow: Start seeds indoors in late winter to early spring in most regions. In subtropical and tropical zones, they can be sown from late summer through spring. Transplant seedlings after the last frost when the soil has warmed.
Germination: Sow seeds 5mm deep in a quality seed-raising mix. Keep moist and warm (optimum 20-30°C). Germination typically takes 7-14 days.
Planting Out: Space plants 40-50 cm apart in a sunny, sheltered position.
Ideal Growing Conditions:
Climate: Thrives in warm, frost-free conditions. Grows well as a summer annual in all Australian zones.
Sun: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for best fruit production and sweetness.
Soil: Prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Slightly raised beds are ideal for soil warmth and drainage.
Watering: Water regularly and deeply to maintain even soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruit set. Mulch well to conserve water.
Harvesting: Fruits can be picked green once they reach full size or left on the plant to mature to their full red colour and maximum sweetness—essential for making your own paprika powder.
